How to compare holiday costs beyond the headline price

Compare flights, hotels, baggage and transfers on equal terms with a practical total-cost method for your next holiday from the UK.

A tempting flight price is a starting point, not your holiday budget. The useful comparison is what the whole trip will cost for your group, with the comfort and flexibility you actually need. This simple method helps you choose between destinations, airports and booking options without losing sight of the final bill.

Set one shared brief before searching

Write down the number of travellers, exact number of nights, acceptable departure airports and the room arrangement. Decide whether you need checked luggage, breakfast and specific flight times. Keep these requirements identical across your shortlist. A room-only offer and a breakfast-inclusive stay are not directly comparable until you account for the meals you would otherwise buy.

Use a total for the whole party first. Per-person prices can hide differences in occupancy, child ages or the number of people sharing a room. Divide the final group total afterwards if that makes your decision easier.

Build the door-to-door transport cost

Add the return fare, your chosen bags and any seats you intend to purchase. Then include travel from home to the UK airport, parking where relevant, and transport between the arrival airport and your accommodation. Price both directions and use services that run at your actual arrival and departure times.

Check the specific fare before adding extras. For example, easyJet separates its small underseat bag allowance from larger cabin-bag options. Buying a bundle only helps if its included benefits replace things you would otherwise pay for. A cheaper flight from a more distant airport may still be good value, but the extra journey belongs in your comparison.

Compare the full accommodation stay

Use the final booking total, not the first nightly figure. Look for mandatory charges, local taxes collected at the property, meal arrangements and any cleaning fee. Check the room type, bed setup and cancellation deadline. Record refundable and non-refundable options separately so a lower price does not disguise a different commitment.

Read the hotel location against your planned days. Saving on a room can be worthwhile; paying repeatedly to reach everything you want to do can undo it. Include only realistic transport spending, rather than assuming you will walk every journey.

Use a clear comparison example

Illustrative example only: one option costs £520 for flights and hotel, plus £70 for bags and £90 for transfers, making £680. Another costs £640 with the bags you need and transfers included. The second option is £40 less on those items despite its higher headline price. These are invented planning figures, not available offers.

Next add meals, activities and mobile data that differ between the options. You do not need a perfect prediction of every coffee. Focus first on meaningful differences and keep a separate spending allowance for choices you can make while away.

Check what your saving asks you to give up

Consider usable holiday time as well as cash. A late arrival followed by an early return may leave fewer hours to enjoy the destination. Before committing, recheck the live total, inclusions and booking conditions on the provider's checkout page. If comparing a package, use its itemised inclusions rather than assuming all packages contain the same extras. Save the confirmation and the details that mattered to your choice.

Take this with you

  • Compare the same travellers, nights, room type and baggage needs.
  • Add airport journeys and destination transfers in both directions.
  • Choose on final cost, usable time and flexibility together.
