For a winter escape from the UK, Madeira and Tenerife both offer compelling reasons to travel. They also reward very different choices of base. If your priority is time beside the sea, start by comparing southern Tenerife. If gardens, Funchal and a carefully planned walking day appeal more, Madeira deserves a close look. Neither island can promise your week's weather, so choose a holiday you would enjoy even if one outdoor plan changes.
Decide what winter sun means to you
A poolside reading week, a city-and-gardens break and an active walking holiday need different accommodation and transport. Write down which one you want before comparing airport fares. A dramatic mountain photograph may tempt you towards an itinerary that bears little resemblance to the restful week you actually need.
Our practical starting point is southern Tenerife for a coast-first stay and Funchal for a Madeira break combining urban exploring with selected outings. These are planning recommendations, not weather guarantees. Tenerife also has historic towns and mountains, while a Madeira holiday can be deliberately relaxed; the best choice follows your priorities rather than a rigid island stereotype.
Compare the coast you will sleep on
Tenerife Tourism describes the south as more arid and the north as wetter and more humid. It also highlights sharp differences between coastal conditions and higher ground. A forecast for one town cannot settle what you should wear for a mountain excursion or a visit to La Laguna.
Madeira's tourism board likewise describes a generally warmer, drier south and more exposed northern and mountain areas. Its weather page includes local forecasts and webcams, useful for checking the part of the island you plan to visit. Treat climate descriptions as background when choosing a base; use the actual forecast to decide each day's activities.
Pay for a location you will use every day
Funchal sits around a bay on Madeira's south coast and offers gardens, museums, historic buildings and the Farmers' Market. Compare the hotel's walking route to the places you will revisit, including gradients and evening transport. A view from high above the bay can be lovely, but it is worth deciding how often you want to travel uphill.
For a southern Tenerife stay, inspect the route between the accommodation, waterfront and restaurants. Check the named airport on the flight and the transfer to your chosen resort. If swimming is central to either trip, ask the property about pool heating, opening periods and any extra access charge; a pool photograph does not answer those questions.
Give mountain days their own preparation
Madeira's classified PR walking trails currently require a timed reservation through the regional SIMplifica platform. Check the specific trail's access conditions, fee and open, restricted or closed status before committing. Weather can close routes, and a reservation is not permission to ignore a closure. Choose a walk that matches your experience and arrange a workable return journey.
On Tenerife, visiting Teide National Park, riding the cable car and reaching the summit are different plans. The summit's Telesforo Bravo trail requires prior reservation through Tenerife ON, and approach trails can have their own requirements. Cable-car operation must be checked separately. Bring suitable mountain layers and footwear, and avoid treating an ascent as an incidental addition to a beach day.
Use a three-day plan you can rearrange
For Madeira, spend day one exploring Funchal's market area and choosing a museum or garden. Set aside day two for one suitable, open walking route with transport planned in advance. Keep day three for another part of Funchal or a coastal outing. Switch the walking day when conditions require, subject to reservation availability, instead of attaching every activity to an inflexible timetable.
For Tenerife, make day one a slow introduction to your coastal base. Give day two to a properly planned Teide outing if conditions allow. On day three, choose another coastal day or a visit to La Laguna's pedestrian historic centre. Check that the journey from your resort leaves enough time to enjoy the town; you do not need to cross the island merely to complete a list.
Compare the holiday you can deliver
Price flights with the bags your activities require, accommodation, meals, airport transfers and the outings you genuinely want. Compare car hire for the relevant days with public transport or organised excursions, including pickup locations. A low room rate loses appeal if every meal or activity needs another paid journey.
Leave some money and time unallocated, and understand cancellation terms for weather-dependent activities. Pack for your chosen plans rather than the sunniest promotional image. Tenerife is a strong starting point for a southern-coast winter escape; Madeira suits a Funchal-and-nature combination. The stronger booking is the one whose everyday experience still appeals when the mountain day moves or the beach afternoon becomes a café afternoon.
Take this with you
- Compare specific coastal bases rather than treating either island as having one climate.
- Start with southern Tenerife for a coast-first break or Funchal for a city-and-nature combination.
- Check Madeira PR reservations and live trail status, and treat Teide summit authorisation separately from the cable car.
- Keep outdoor days flexible and compare the full cost of reaching the activities you want.
Put the advice into practice.
